Beskrivning
Sexual satisfaction links to subjective well-being and are influenced by numerous factors, yet psychological and societal/cultural influences are under-researched compared to physical/medical factors. This project explores sexual satisfaction in various Swedish population groups and examines relationships between protective psychological factors and overall health, as well as cultural influences.Qualitative interviews were conducted with 48 individuals from diverse groups: those undergoing medication for depression (n = 11), in or post-menopause (n = 8), in long-term relationships (n = 11), elderly women (n = 8), and bisexual individuals (n = 10). The study investigates sexual satisfaction in relation to life-course events, relationships, sexual orientation, and clinical treatment.
Sexuality is a dynamic and evolving aspect of human life, challenging to define as either practice or identity. Sexual satisfaction depends on broader life contexts and is often misrepresented and stigmatized, particularly during stages like menopause or in older age. Navigating societal norms can either ease or complicate one's relationship with sexuality. Sexuality is constructed within social contexts and in relation to one’s body and its changes over time. Norms offer both freedom and constraints, sometimes contradicting each other (e.g., expectation for the elderly to lose interest in sex while still engaging in it). Discussions about norms are crucial for sexual health and these conversations help individuals calibrate cognitive and emotional expectations. The dualities of sexuality—private yet socially constructed, positive yet negative, static yet changeable—highlight the complexity of its nature and its governance by societal norms.
