The Desert-Governess Romance: A Dual Captivity/Escape Fantasy

In this paper, we discuss how two sub genres – the desert romance and the governess novel – have blended into what we refer to as the desert-governess romance. What emerges from this analysis is that the initially disparate genres share surprising commonalities, not least in regard to the dual forms of escape offered by the fusion of the historical (typically Regency) backdrop and the geographical space of the desert.
