The market for popular romance novels is huge with new iterations of traditional themes appearing all the time. Publishers like Harlequin categorise romance novels according to certain generic conventions, but what happens when these conventions collide? Here we look at the theme of hope and despair in novels featuring the seemingly improbable match between the desert sheikh and the English governess in what we identify as a distinctive sub-genre of the popular romance, the desert-governess romance.
