Forskning
My research focuses on how humans, as an integral part of the natural environment, are affected by exposure to environmental pollutants. These pollutants can have serious health consequences, contributing to the development of non-communicable diseases. With a background in environmental science, biogeography, and ecology, I aim to align these disciplines with the study of human chemical exposure, focusing primarily on organic contaminants such as phthalates, bisphenols, persistent organic pollutants (POPs), and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). I am particularly interested in quantifying chemical exposures, identifying sources, and characterizing the determinants of exposure in different populations. My current research involves populations from Slovenia, Sweden, and Costa Rica, where I investigate how pollution affects human health and leads to adverse health effects. The sheer number of industrial chemicals in use today far exceeds the capacities of monitoring systems, leaving many chemicals unregulated and their effects poorly understood. This poses unpredictable risks to ecosystems and human health. Pollution is a global problem, accelerated by climate change, globalization, and overpopulation, which further complicates the assessment and management of chemical exposure. By improving our understanding of the sources and determinants of exposure, my work aims to contribute to the growing body of research focused on minimizing the distribution and negative impacts of environmental contaminants.
