Anders Ljungar-Chapelon

Professor emeritus

Personlig profil

Konstnärligt arbete

Prof. Emeritus Dr. ANDERS LJUNGAR-CHAPELON holds since many years a professorship of flute and research (artistic research and music education) at the Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts/Lund University where he has taught flautists in the International flute class from five continents and 26 countries, he is a Sankyo Artist (Sankyo Flutes Japan), and is affiliated to several Brazilian universities as a researcher, masterclass-teacher, examiner and lecturer. Parallel to these activities in Sweden, Japan, and Brazil he held for nineteen years a professorship in flute and research at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) in Manchester (England), and for several years a professorship in flute, Traverso, and research at the Grieg Academy/Faculty of Art, Music and Design at the University of Bergen (Norway).

Ljungar-Chapelon performs extensively as a soloist throughout continental Europe, Asia, Australia, the Americas, and New Zealand, appears on radio and television, and is a regular guest soloist at international festivals on five continents. For many years he lived in Germany and France, and started a career being just 22 years old as a principal flautist in symphony-, opera-, and chamber- orchestras (Flensburg, Köln, Cannes, Salzburg, Paris). Many of his interpretations are available on CD, with a repertoire from J. S. Bach, Hotteterre, Montéclair, Blavet, Vivaldi, Telemann, Mozart, rediscovered works by Swedish composers such as Johan Agrell, Johan Fredrik Grenser, Carl Jacob von Quanten, Anders Wesström, Erik Drake and Johan van Boom from the 18th and 19th Centuries to music from the 20th Century such as Sonata Opus 26 by Arnold Schoenberg and Sonatine (1946) by Pierre Boulez, music for solo flute by Debussy, Varèse, Jolivet, Boulez, Berio, Ferneyhough and Takemitsu. His repertoire includes works dedicated to him by Swedish composers such as Staffan Björklund, Johannes Johansson, Kent Olofsson, Staffan Storm, Karl-Erik Welin, together with Pierre-Yves Artaud in Paris, including music from the 21st Century by Raul Costa d’Avila in Pelotas (Brazil), Rudolf Sulzenbacher in Paris, and Hina Sakamoto in Tokyo.

Ljungar-Chapelon is a sought-after professor and lecturer at universities and music academies on five continents. He is the first Scandinavian flautist to have been invited to teach at the prestigious Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris (CNSMP), the famous International Summer Academy Nice (France), and Oxford Flute Summer School (England). In addition to Swedish, the languages he uses in his teaching and lectures are French, German, English, and Danish. He is also certified as a Suzuki flute teacher.

As a researcher and supervisor (bachelor, master, and PhD), Ljungar-Chapelon works with artistic research and music education research, the latter with a focus on the education of professional musicians and preferably flautists. His doctoral thesis (PhD, 2008) analysed French flute traditions, its learning, craftsmanship and aesthetics covering the period from 1707 to 2003. His artistic research areas are musical interpretation, French early 18th Century music around Hotteterre and La Barre, musical punctuation and phrasing, Beethoven's Violin sonatas in transcriptions for flute by Henri Altès (c.1870), Debussy's Syrinx ou La Flûte de Pan (1913) for flute and its connection to theatre, Scandinavian flute music and flute-playing in the 18th and 19th Centuries, Schoenberg's twelve-tone technique, as well as investigations into flute acoustics. Furthermore, he conducts research on European flutes such as the Renaissance Traverso, the one-keyed Traverso and the Boehm-flutes in cross-cultural combinations with non-European instruments such as the Korean Kayagum. His research is regularly presented at international conferences in Africa, Asia, Australia, continental Europe, and Latin-America.

Ljungar-Chapelon has made around 75 publications discussing musical interpretation and above mentioned topics, and develops teaching materials for the Boehm-flute and Traverso, he writes books and articles in the special press, edits historical and contemporary music manuscripts, is editor and author of his series The Flautists Vademecum with until now 38 publications (Lund University), furthermore he is published by Autographus Musicus (Stockholm), with the series The Swedish Transverse Flute and Flautissimo, where his edition of Debussy's Syrinx ou La Flûte de Pan has received international recognition, and was republished in the prestigious series Wiener Urtext Editions (Austria).

Ljungar-Chapelon's multifaceted field of activity has made him an authority on 17th, 18th, and 19th Century flutes like the Renaissance Traverso, the Galoubet, the one-keyed Traverso in theory and practice, including reconstructions of Hotteterre's Basse de Traversière and recently the Hotteterre Traverso Model II (La Couture-Boussey, Bruxelles, Paris, Berlin, St. Peterburg), in collaboration with the master builder of Traverso flutes Alain Weemaels in Brussels. For several years he designed flutes for TAMINO FLUTES in Beijing (China).

Ljungar-Chapelon studied in Gothenburg (Gérard Schaub), Copenhagen (Ørnulf Gullbransen and Poul Birkelund), Paris (Alain Marion), and Cologne (Amadeus Quartet). Close contact with flautist and professor Alain Marion in Paris was particularly inspiring, as were the chamber-music studies for the Amadeus Quartet in Cologne (Germany). He is as well prize-winner in International flute competitions.

When Ljungar-Chapelon performs, he plays on a 24-carat golden flute built especially for him by

Sankyo Flutes (Japan), and on Traversi built by Alain Weemaels in Brussels.
