Prof. Dr. ANDERS LJUNGAR-CHAPELON is professor of flute and researcher (artistic research and music education) at the Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts/Lund University, Sankyo Artist (Sankyo Flutes Japan), affiliated to Brazilian universities as an examiner and lecturer. Parallel to these activities he held for nineteen years a professorship at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) in Manchester (England), and for a few years a professorship at the Grieg Academy/Faculty of Art, Music and Design at the University of Bergen (Norway).
Ljungar-Chapelon performs extensively as a soloist throughout Europe, Asia, Australia, the Americas, and New Zealand, appears on radio and television, and is a regular guest soloist at international festivals on five continents. For many years he lived in Germany and France, and worked as a principal flautist in symphony, opera, and chamber orchestras. Many of his interpretations are available on CD, with a repertoire from Bach, Hotteterre, Montéclair, Blavet, Vivaldi, Telemann, Mozart, rediscovered works by Swedish composers from the 18th and 19th Centuries to music from the 20th Century such as Arnold Schoenberg's Sonata Opus 26, Boulez Sonatine, music for solo flute by Debussy, Varèse, Jolivet, Boulez, Berio, Ferneyhough and Takemitsu. His repertoire includes works dedicated to him by Swedish composers such as Björklund, Johansson, Olofsson, Storm, Welin, Artaud and Sulzenbacher in Paris, and Hina Sakamoto in Tokyo.
Ljungar-Chapelon is a sought-after professor and lecturer at universities and music academies on five continents. He is the first Scandinavian to have been invited to teach at the prestigious Paris Conservatoire (CNSMP) and the famous Nice Summer Academy. In addition to Swedish, the languages he uses in his teaching and lectures are French, German, English, and Danish. He is also certified as a Suzuki flute teacher.
As a researcher and supervisor (candidate, master, and PhD), Ljungar-Chapelon works with artistic research and music pedagogical research, the latter with a focus on the education of professional musicians and preferably flutists. His doctoral thesis (PhD) analysed French flute traditions, its learning, craftsmanship and aesthetics covering the period from 1707 to 2003. His artistic research areas are musical interpretation, French early 18th century music around Hotteterre, musical punctuation, Beethoven's violin sonatas in transcriptions for flute, Debussy's Syrinx for flute and its connection to theatre, Scandinavian flute music and flute playing in the 18th and 19th centuries, Schoenberg's twelve-tone technique, as well as investigations into flute acoustics. Furthermore, he conducts research on European 18th Century flutes and Boehm-flutes in cross-cultural combinations with non-European instruments such as the Korean Kayagum. His research is regularly presented at international conferences in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, Latin-America. He develops teaching materials, writes articles in the special press, edits historical and contemporary music manuscripts, is editor and author of the series The Flautists Vademecum (Lund University), furthermore he is published by Autographus Musicus(Stockholm), with the series The Swedish Transverse Flute and Flautissimo, where his edition of Debussy's Syrinx ou La Flûte de Pan has received international recognition, and was published in the prestigious series Wiener Urtext Editions(Austria).
Ljungar-Chapelon's multifaceted field of activity has made him an authority on 18th and 19th century flutes in theory and practice, including reconstructions of Hotteterre's Basse de Traversière and more recently a Hotteterre Traverso Model II, in collaboration with the master builder of Traverso flutes Alain Weemaels in Brussels. For a few years he designed flutes for TAMINO FLUTES in Beijing (China).
Ljungar-Chapelon studied in Gothenburg (Gérard Schaub), Copenhagen (Ørnulf Gullbransen and Poul Birkelund), Paris (Alain Marion), and Cologne (Amadeus Quartet). Close contact with flautist and professor Alain Marion in Paris was particularly inspiring, as were the chamber-music studies for the Amadeus Quartet in Cologne (Germany).
When Ljungar-Chapelon performs, he plays on a 24-carat golden flute built especially for him by Sankyo Flutes (Japan), and on Traversi built by Alain Weemaels in Brussels.
