Forskning

I am  Associate Professor in experimental pulmonary medicine in the group of Lung Biology.

My research focus is to increase the understanding of underlying mechanisms linked to disease development and disease progession, find relevant biomarkers, and evaluate pharmacological treatment strategies by using relevant model system mimicing in vivo condtitions. The goal is to improve treatments for patients and inform about risk factors and preventive measures.

One of my projects is related to vascular changes in COPD. In this project we examining cellular responses induced by hypoxia which may result in a greater understanding of the pathological mechanisms driving the progression of COPD.

In another ongoing project we are investiging health effects of air pollutions related to  development and progression of chronic lung diseases.

I did my undergraduate studies (Master of Medicine Science in Toxicology) at Karolinska Institutet in 2002, and did my PhD in the group of Professor Sven-Erik Dahlén, Experimental Asthma and Allergy Research, at Karolinska Institutet. In 2007 I defended my thesis entitled ”Nitric Oxide and Eicosanoids: Significance and Interactions During Antigen-Induced Responses in Peripheral Lung Tissue”. I concluded that NO had a beneficial role in the peripheral lung and that nitric oxide (NO) may interact with eicosanoids, especially leukotrienes. These research findings were important since NO is produced in high levels in the exhaled air of asthmatic subjects and nowadays used as an inflammatory marker in asthma diagnosis. I also received an ERS fellowship during my PhD studies to join Professor Stefan Uhlig’s group in Lung Pharmacology at Borstel Research Center in Germany to learn the new ex vivo method Precision-cut lung slices (PCLS) for pharmacological studies of eicosanoids in distal lung compartments.
