I am dedicated to understanding the neurobiological underpinnings of depression and anxiety disorders. These are common and debilitating conditions for which current treatments in many cases are unsatisfactory. Depression and anxiety disorders are risk factors for suicide, somatic illness and early mortality. Therefore, it is of great importance to gain a better understanding of the neurobiological underpinnings of these disorders and to develop new biological treatment targets. The overreaching hypothesis that frames my work is that depression and anxiety disorders is accompanied by, if not caused by, identifiable biological abnormalities that contribute to both the psychological and somatic aspects of the illness. This is a comprehensive hypothesis involving the study of peripheral indices of accelerated cellular aging and putative physiological mediators including inflammation, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction and metabolic alterations. My ultimate research goals are to 1. Develop a new mechanistic understanding of depression and anxiety pathophysiology 2. Identify new mechanism-based molecular targets for treatment. 3. Identify blood-based biomarkers for treatment response.

I am funded by the Swedish Research Council, Marie Sklodowska Curie Actions, Cofund, the Swedish Society of Medicine, the Söderström-Königska Foundation, the Sjöbring Foundation, OM Persson Foundation and the province of Scania (Sweden) state grants (ALF).
