I am the PI of Refugee Finance: Histories, Frameworks, Practices (REF-FIN), a 5-year project started in January 2024 and funded by the European Research Council, Starting Grant 2023. REF-FIN examines the political, financial and legal processes enabling refugee finance and studies its longer-term socio-economic implications.

I am also the PI of Screening for Sustainability: Understanding the EU Taxonomy Regulation and its ‘Do No Significant Ham’ Requirement, a 4-year project funded by Formas, started at the end of 2022. This project examines the way in which the EU Taxonomy and its delegated acts align with international human rights obligations and international environmental law obligations, within the broader context of climate finance and business and human rights.

I am also the Co-I of the project Implementing the European Green Deal through the EU Taxonomy Regulation, led by Britta Sjöstedt and funded by the Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation. The project examines, from an international legal perspective, the way in which economic activities are identifies as ‘sustainable’ for the implementation of the European Green Deal. It also considers the relevance of the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment in this sustainability screening process.

More broadly, my research focuses on the intersection and implementation of international economic law and international human rights law in complex contexts, such as situations of armed conflict, climate breakdown, humanitarian and health emergencies, forced migration. My work examines instances of privatization of public goods, from water utilities to humanitarian and health responses and, within these contexts, I am interested in sustainable finance, its implementation and implications. I am the author of Investment and Human Rights in Armed Conflict (Hart, 2019) which has been described as "compelling, innovative and insightful" and "a mandatory read to understand and master where the debate on investment and human rights should be directed". I am a founding member of The IEL Collective, of which the Faculty of Law is an institutional member. I am also a member of the Law and Development Research Network (LDRN) and of the steering committee of the research hub New Frontiers in International Development Finance (NeFDeF).

I am a Visiting Professor at the College of Europe, European Interdisciplinary Studies Department, Natolin Campus, where I co-direct with Professor Jean-Pierre Cassarino the course Cooperation on Migration Governance between the EU and its Neighbourhood.

I am on the Editorial Board of The Journal of World Investment and Trade. I am also a member of the Legal Action Committee of GLAN (Global Legal Action Network) and on the Research Advisory Group of ICOCA, the International Code of Conduct Association for private security service providers. My non-academic background includes extended deployments as a human rights field officer with the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) and as a consultant for the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.
