Forskning

During the 2011-2013 period, my research project was to develop a formally precise and empirically adequate model of scientific inquiry, based on Hintikka's Interrogative Model of Inquiry. This research has been successfully carried with: 1) the formulation of a model merging algorithmic learning- and game-theoretic approaches; 2) a successful application to experimental data from the psychology of reasoning (esp. Wason's "Selection Task"). Both outcomes have resulted in conference presentations and publications, both in philosophy and cognitive science.

Two by-products of this research, obtained in collaboration with J.Jacot (Lund, Theoretical Philosophy) have been: 1) the formulation of a generalized version of Game-Theoretic Semantics; and: 2) a study of the interplay between the pragmatics of questions, and the outcome of inquiry, when sources of answers are strategic agents. Both have also been presented in conferences and published.

Between March 2013 and April 2017, I was involved in the "Knowledge in a Digital World" (KDW) project, where my main research focused mainly on determining the how much the personalization of web search engines affects the information we obtain. Together with Pr. Ulrike Hahn (Birbeck-London) and Magnus Jiborn (KDW-Lund), I began to investigate empirically the "filter bubbles" hypothesis, which states that personalized searches tend to return information that confirms our beliefs, or at least do not challenge them. A secondary research output of my work with KDW, in relation with the epistemology of information-seeking, was the characterization of a logic of discovery capturing the "Sherlock Holmes sense of Deduction", which built up on my postdoctoral work, and was also published as part of the KDW project research output.
