My research is interdisciplinary at the intersection of psychology, philosophy, and cognitive science, and concerns foundational issues within especially nonverbal cognition and communication from the developmental, and evolutionary perspectives. I study embodied and embedded dynamic processes of interacting human infants and adults, social robots, materials, and nonhuman primates within an ecological and cultural framework. The emphasis lies on integrating research from different disciplines to solve problems that resist disciplinary solutions and develop new (testable) explanatory hypotheses, but also do empirical work. Publications in psychology, cognitive science, and philosophy centred along three parallel lines of research: (1) social cognition, cooperation, coordination, social norms, intersubjectivity (You - I - We), joint action; (2) multimodal communication, verbal reference, pointing, gaze, joint attention, gesture, emotion; (3) improvisation, perceptual meta-cognition (meta-attention), skill and learning, (sensori)motor cognition, pre-reflective cognition, creativity, change-blindness.  On-going work concerns (a) craft thinking, material engagement, skill development, and aesthetic experience; (b) HRI human-social robot interaction; (c) care, dialogue, mutual recognition, and second-person ethics, (d) joint improvisation, togetherness and the We; (e) the arts (broadly) and crafts practice.
