The vision of my research group is to conduct scientific research of high quality in the field of materials science to develop new types of nanoparticle-based materials with designed properties in a safe and sustainable manner. To realize nanoparticles with controllable size, morphology, crystal structure, and chemical composition on a large scale, at low costs, and in a safe and environmentally friendly way, we use a method known as spark ablation. Spark ablation is an aerosol-based generation method with superior capabilities concerning mixing different materials into single nanoparticles and is excellently described in the book:
Spark Ablation: Building Blocks for Nanotechnology.

We mainly focus on the design of magnetic and catalytic nanoparticle-based materials to understand how nanoparticle properties can be tuned to improve the magnetic and catalytic performance of such materials. Naturally we therefore also devote a large part of our research efforts to advanced material characterization. Our key characterization tools include electron microscopy (SEM, TEM, HRTEM, XEDS, STEM, EELS) and x-ray-based methods (XPS, XRD). The magnetic and catalytic properties are evaluated by several different methods including SQUID, GC-MC, and NMR techniques to mention a few.

Our central research topics include:

  • Development of multifunctional nanoparticle-based materials
  • Self-assembly of nanoparticles into 1D, 2D, and 3D structures
  • Creation of new types of nanoparticle catalysts
  • In situ characterization of nanoparticles by ETEM and HPXPS
  • Understanding and tuning nanoparticle magnetism
  • Handling of nanoparticles in a safe and sustainable manner
