The main aim of my research is to better understand the etiology and clinical manifestations of psychopathology in children and adolescents. My research spans from prospective studies focused on the onset and maintenance of psychopathology to clinical trials examining treatments, assessment methods, and service delivery models. I am currently the PI of four research projects.
1. The IRMA Study: I am the principal investigator of the IRMA study, a large-scale longitudinal research project funded by Forte, the Kavli Foundation, and EpiHealth. IRMA is dedicated to understanding the onset and progression of mental illness during childhood and adolescence. The study aims to map and characterize individual mental health trajectories, identify key risk, promotive, and protective factors, and develop advanced prediction models by integrating demographic, clinical, genetic, and environmental data from a large and diverse sample of 616 children, half of whom have two biological parents with mental illness, placing them at high risk. Additionally, the study includes a nested randomized controlled trial (RCT) that examines the effects of long-term prevention strategies for high-risk children. IRMA seeks to inform tailored prevention strategies that enhance mental health outcomes for children at high risk of developing mental illness.
2. Stepped or Stratified Care for Youth Anxiety Disorders: I am the co-principal investigator of a large-scale non-inferiority randomized controlled trial that evaluates two service delivery models—stepped care and stratified care—for anxiety disorders in youth. This study aims to determine whether stepped care is non-inferior to stratified care in terms of clinical efficacy, cost-effectiveness, and long-term outcomes. Additionally, we are developing sophisticated prediction models that incorporate demographic, clinical, and genetic data to forecast treatment responses and long-term trajectories over two years. By recruiting an exceptionally large and diverse clinical sample (n = 514), the study seeks to optimize evidence-based care delivery for youth with anxiety disorders, with the long-term goal to improve accessibility and improve long-term outcomes.
3. A Prospective Cohort Study of Youth with Gender Dysphoria: I am the co-principal investigator of a large-scale prospective cohort study on gender dysphoria in children and adolescents. This project aims to build a comprehensive, research-based knowledge base to develop evidence-based, safe, and effective care for young individuals with gender dysphoria. Our study aims to encompasses the world's largest and most well-defined cohort of 500–700 children and adolescents (ages 11–17) from Malmö and Stockholm, Sweden, seeking care for gender dysphoria.
4. Beyond Symptoms in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: I am the principal investigator of this study that aims to deepen the understanding of how obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) affects daily life and overall wellbeing across different age groups. Recruiting both youths and adults with OCD from specialist psychiatric services in Southern Sweden, all participants undergo intensive therapist-led exposure and response prevention as part of the study. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys, individual in-depth interviews, focus groups, and Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) to gather rich, multifaceted data. The aim is to capture the subjective experiences of individuals living with OCD and evaluate the effects of treatment on wellbeing. By integrating diverse data sources, the long-term goal of the study is to develop more holistic and effective support services that enhance the quality of life for those affected by OCD.
I am permanently employed as a senior clinical psychologist within the child and adolescent mental health services in Skåne with regional responsibilities for education and research.
I am affiliated with Baylor College of Medicine in Houston (United States). I have ongoing collaborations with research groups at Karolinska Insitutet (Sweden), Uppsala University (Sweden), Temple University (United States), Miguel Hernández University of Elche (Spain), and University of Waikato (New Zealand).
