Forskning

Miia Halme-Tuomisaari is a legal anthropologist specialized in the analysis of the contemporary human rights phenomenon. She has done ethnographic fieldwork at the UN Human Rights Committee, the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and NGOs, as well as archival research on the International League for the Rights of Man.

She is an editorial board member of PoLAR: Political and Legal Anthropology Review and Social Anthropology / Anthropologie Sociale and the co-founder of Allegra Lab. In 2019-2020 she was a member of the Executive Committee of the European Association of Social Anthropologists (EASA).

Her books include Human Rights in Action: Learning Expert Knowledge (Brill, 2010) and Revisiting the Origins of Human Rights (co-ed with Pamela Slotte, CUP 2015). She is currently preparing a monograph on her work at the Human Rights Committee.

Her courses include 'Human Rights in the History of Politics and Philosophy', 'Human Rights as a Legal Phenomenon', 'Human Rights Research Methods and Ethics' as well as 'Anthropological Approaches to Human Rights Monitoring'. She supervises bachelor, master and doctoral students at Lund's inter-disciplinary human rights programs.

She is Docent of International law at the University of Turku (2016), Docent of Social and Cultural Anthropology, specialization legal anthropology at the University of Jyväskylä (2018), and Docent of Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Helsinki (2019).
