Personlig profil

My research interests focus on the question of politics of transformative change for sustainable future as well as the political agency of change. I explore collective movements for sustainability through the case studies of citizen municipalism in Barcelona and renewable energy cooperativism in different continents such as Samsö island, Denmark and South Lalitpur, Nepal. My overall aim with my research is to understand political opportunity structures that make citizen collective action possible.

Throughout my work, I also rework the concepts of political community and ecological citizenship, which refer to a ‘new politics of obligation’, according to which human beings have obligations to non-humans such as animals, trees, mountains, oceans, and other members of the biotic community. At the center of my theoretical exploration is the firm belief that conventional conceptions of justice and citizenship so far have not provide us with an adequate set of tools for resolving the difficulties created by ecological challenges today and future. In line with the ambition to understand the political significance of intrinsic valuation of non-human species, I have also acted as a coordinating lead author of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), in the international effort to develop methodological framework for pluralistic valuation of nature.
