Forskning

Dr Nicole van der Burg's post-doctoral research is focused on finding and validating biomarkers that predict and differentiate subgroups and responders in asthma and COPD. Her research includes collecting and assessing airway physiology, airway nitic oxide levels, airway fluid, airway tissue and periferal blood from patients with asthma or COPD with either real-life cohorts, challange studies or theraputic intervention studies. Samples are assessed for differences using a wide varitey of techniques including genetic expression, protein levels, cell types and tissue structure. Dr van der Burg is passionate in defining predictive and/or targetable biomarkers for respiratory patients so that they can be significantly more informed on expectations, preventative measures and treatments available. She is an active board member of Lund University's Future Faculty and an Editorial board member for the Journal of Respiratory Medicine.

Dr van der Burg completed her Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Genetics at the University of Queensland in 2010. She was then awarded a first class honors in Neuroscience by the Queensland Brain Institute in 2011. Afterwards, Nicole worked for three years in a start up company, Vaxxas, as a Biological Scientist. Following this she completed her PhD at the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology in 2019, titled "Reducing allergic airway inflammation with high-density microprojection array skin patches".

Dr van der Burg has been a member ofthe Australasian Society for Immunology since 2017, EAACI since 2018, the Swedish Lung and Medicin Foundation since 2019 and the European Respirtory Society since 2020.
