My research focuses on improving our understanding of the heart as an organ of flow in health and in heart failure. I work with physicians and engineers to develop, validate and implement new methods for advanced quantification of cardiac function from magnetic resonance imaging. The goal is to improve the quality of healthcare by giving doctors better tools to guide patient diagnosis and treatment.

Heart failure patients are limited in day-to-day activities such as walking by an inability to increase their cardiac pumping in response to changing conditions. In my research I try to understand the underlying mechanisms for cardiac performance, so that diagnosis can be made earlier, and treatments may be better selected and evaluated. More specifically I investigate the mechanisms by which the heart is filled with blood, by advanced analysis of pressure and energy levels inside the heart. This is achieved through three-dimensional, time-resolved blood flow measurements, commonly called "4D flow".

This method allows an unprecedented view into the dynamics of the beating heart and promises to uncover previously unseen aspects of heart function. Scientific breakthroughs include a new way of selecting patients likely to benefit from pacemaker treatment in heart failure, and the first description of how vortex rings of blood inside the heart contribute to its final shape.
