Forskning

Thérèse Murphy is the Raoul Wallenberg Visiting Chair in Human Rights and Humanitarian Law. Working alongside postdoctoral researchers, a research assistant and senior academics in both the Faculty of Law and the Raoul Wallenberg Institute, she leads a team focused on the future of human rights.

Concurrently, Thérèse is professor of law and director of the Health & Human Rights Unit at Queen’s University Belfast.

She is chairperson of the European Master’s on Human Rights and Democratisation, and a member of the governing council of the Global Campus of Human Rights, a network of 100 universities educating the next generation of human rights professionals.

Her field of expertise is human rights law and practice, with particular interests in health, science and technology. Working with UNESCO and the Global Campus of Human Rights, she created the world’s first free online course on science and human rights.

She is a member of the editorial board of the Human Rights Law Review, co-editor of the Bloomsbury/Hart book series, Law and Health, and a founding editor of the Human Rights Preparedness blog.

Thérèse's public service roles include being a member of the European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies. Appointed by the President of the European Commission, this independent, multidisciplinary body advises on policies where ethical, social and fundamental rights issues intersect with science and technology.

She also sits as a member of Ireland’s National Research Ethics Committee on Medical Devices, Northern Ireland’s Clinical Ethics Forum and the Life and Health Sciences Committee of the Royal Irish Academy. Previously, she was a member of the Moral & Ethical Advisory Group established by the Department of Health and Social Care in London.

A former Fulbright Fellow, Thérèse studied law at University College Dublin and the University of Cambridge, and was admitted to the bar at King’s Inns, Dublin.
