Forskning

Professor Xue-Song Bai joined the Department of Energy Sciences at Lund University in April 1995, where he leads a research group in the Division of Fluid Mechanics with a focus on Reactive Fluid Dynamics. He received his PhD in Fluid Mechanics from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Sweden, in 1994 and earned his Docent qualification at Lund University in 1997. He became a senior lecturer in the Department of Energy Sciences in 1999 and has been a professor in the Division of Fluid Mechanics since 2002.

Prof. Xue-Song Bai’s research interests include flame propagation and extinction theory, pollutant-formation mechanisms in chemically reactive flows, turbulence–chemistry interaction modelling, direct numerical simulation and large-eddy simulation of turbulent reactive flows, and modelling of solid/gas and liquid/gas turbulent two-phase reactive flows. His work spans a wide range of energy-conversion processes, including internal combustion engines, gas turbines, and biomass furnaces.

Prof. Bai’s current research focuses on clean combustion technologies for sustainable fuels, including hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, and sustainable aviation fuels. In 2009, he received a prestigious Framework Grant of 14 million SEK from the Swedish Research Council for research on flame–turbulence interaction in lean premixed flames. In 2012, a paper he co-authored and presented at the International Conference on Applied Energy (ICAE 2012) received the Best Paper Award. In 2018, he was elected a Fellow of the Combustion Institute.

To date, Prof. Bai has supervised 30 PhD students to completion. He has published 200+ peer-reviewed journal articles, 100+ conference papers, two book chapters, and co-edited a book published by Cambridge University Press in 2022 titled Advanced Turbulent Combustion Physics and Applications. According to Google Scholar, his citation record includes an h-index of 60.

Prof. Xue-Song Bai teaches Turbulent Combustion, which is a course at Lund University for the 3rdand 4thyear undergraduate students, as well as for Ph.D. students. In 2016, as the principal teacher Prof. Bai taught a CeCOST National Graduate School Course “Turbulent Combustion”, which was given to Ph.D. students in Sweden as well as students worldwide.
