My research focuses on the intersections between Islam, gender, and migration in two regional contexts: Europe and the Middle East. I have a particular interest in transnational Muslim female resistance movements and have conducted extensive ethnographic research in Iran and the Arab Gulf states to examine the relationship between female agency expressed through the aesthetic performance of the political on the female body. I am also interested in transnational migration and received over £350.000 (over 4 mil. SEK) of research funding, including two major British Academy grants, to examine gendered power dynamics due to the conflict-induced displacement of Syrian and Iraqi refugees who have found refuge in Jordan, Germany and Great Britain.
The aim of my research is to offer new understandings of Muslim female mobilization and political participation by examining the various strategies Muslim women employ to express resistance to existing orders of power.
