Cardiovascular risk factors during pregnancy: Mechanisms explaining utero-placental, fetal and maternal cardiovascular function in normal and complicated pregnancies



The primary aims of this project are to uncover the mechanisms and pathophysiology of utero-placental dysfunction and its impact on fetal and maternal cardiovascular function, and how the fetal and maternal cardiovascular systems interplay.

New MRI techniques for fetal cardiovascular function, flow and saturation quantification are combined with quantitative mapping techniques for in vivo determination of placental function to further the understanding of complicated pregnancies such as intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), preeclampsia and congenital cardiac malformations. Follow-up studies of the maternal cardiovascular system after delivery examine the cardiovascular remodelling after pregnancy. Examinations of the cardiovascular system and kidneys in adolescents after IUGR give insight into the renal-cardiac interplay and potential intervention before development of hypertension and long-term effects such as cardiac failure.
