Crisis and Transformation: the rise of financialization and marketization in the late 20th century

Projekt: Avhandling

The aim of the project is to provide an understanding of the processes that together shaped the transformation of Western economies from the 1970s onwards. That development is relevant in the present context of slow economic growth, concerns about “secular stagnation”, and mounting demands for transformation to a sustainable economy. As pointed out by Mokyr (2018), national accounts and GDP “were designed for a wheat-and-steel economy”. Arguably a first step towards an appropriate measurement is an examination of the structural changes that the advanced economies have undergone since the high days of industrialism. The structural changes should be seen in the context of crisis and “stagflation” in the 1970s, and in connection with the subsequent financialization and marketization.
