Designing the cold neutron source for the ESS

A new neutron source is proposed for the European Spallation Source (ESS). This source made of the liquid deuterium moderator should outperform the currently constructed upper moderator at the ESS in terms of the intensity of cold neutrons. The design study of such a neutron source has been performed by the HighNESS project.

The intense beam of cold, low-energy, neutrons with energies between 2 and 20 Å opens up the possibility to conduct fundamental physics experiments at the ESS in the future. The experimental diversity of the ESS would benefit from building fundamental physics experiments since this field has not been sufficiently covered by the currently constructed set of instruments. One example of such an experiment has also been studied by the HighNESS project. It is called the NNBAR experiment and is meant to investigate the neutron into antineutron oscillations. The proposed cold neutron moderator should help NNBAR to reach world-leading experimental sensitivity.

This doctoral project focuses on the optimisation and design study of the cold neutron moderator with one of the primary aims to deliver the intense beam of cold neutrons to the NNBAR such that it can reach as high experimental sensitivity as possible. However, there are more instruments that should take advantage of this moderator. These additional instruments should expand the experimental capabilities within condensed matter science. Therefore, the presence of multiple instruments must be accounted for in the optimisation. This makes the optimisation a very complex problem.
