Effects of the antimicrobial peptide LL-37 on host cell viability

The human host defense peptide LL-37 combats microrganisms through different mechanisms, e.g. via permeabilization of the bacterial cell-wall. Our data suggest that LL-37 also reduces host cell viability and that the organism is equiped with protective mechanisms to inhibit the deleterious effects of LL-37. We are interested in the balance between beneficial effects of LL-37 and its cytotoxic effects that may influence host cells especially locally at the site of the inflammation.
