Estimates of carbon stocks in the Baltic Sea land-sea continuum

The main objective of this PhD project is to assess the total carbon stock stored in the coastal sediments along the Baltic Sea coast. Burial rates of coastal marine carbon and long-term variations will also be assessed. The coastal marine carbon stocks can be significant and if good estimates are available this can have relevance for national carbon-budgets.
To fully understand the effects of ongoing environmental changes on the amount and composition of organic matter entering the coastal zone it is necessary to have good estimates of the coastal marine carbon stock changes.
Carbon stocks estimates will primarily be assessed on the wealth of available data on carbon content in marine sediments along the Baltic coast. Statistical and GIS-tools will be used to interpolate the carbon stocks.
