IETS Annex XVII - Membranes in Biorefineries

Projekt: Forskning

Projektinformation

Beskrivning

Process streams in biorefineries are complex multi-component mixtures. Separating different components in an energy efficient and environmental friendly way is a challenge in which membrane processes have a key role. Therefore, the IEA established IETS Annex XVII for the energy efficient separation of lignocellulosic biomass. The Annex created a network of experts sharing experiences and developing methods for designing of membrane plants. In the Annex continuation, the raw material base will be expanded to cover e.g. algae. New membrane processes such as pervaporation, membrane distillation and forward osmosis will be also included. The water issues in the biorefineries will get increased weight in the future Annex. The previous Annex (2013-2017) was coordinated from Sweden. Sweden will also coordinate this continuation of Annex XVII (04/2018-03/2022). This will secure the optimal support for Swedish industry in its transition to a sustainable society based on renewable raw
materials.
