Immigrant Intermarriage and Native Exogamy in Scandinavia, 1968 to 2011

The project focuses on marriages between immigrants and natives in Sweden and Denmark. Immigrant intermarriage has received large research interest in different contexts. As intermarriage is the logic outcome of the integration process and as it has the potential to foster further immigrant integration, research on intermarriage has been closely related to research on structural assimilation. In my dissertation I extend this view by focusing on natives. Intermarriage is in this regard related to a society’s openness towards immigrants. Using Swedish and Danish register data, I look at both determinants and consequences of inter-ethnic marriages. I study natives’ and immigrants’ status on the marriage market, and potential outcomes of intermarriage such as immigrants’ economic integration.
