Beskrivning

Mitochondrial dysfunction is implicated in several chronic neurodegenerative disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease (PD), Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and Alzheimer's Dementia (AD) and also in patients with certain muscular disorders.
The aim of the study is to determine if defects in mitochondrial function can be detected in peripheral blood cells (platelets and white blood cells) derived from patients with chronic neurodegenerative or muscular disorders using high-resolution respirometry.
Some degree of mitochondrial involvement in the pathogenesis of all these diseases have been suggested but the exact role of the mitochondria in neurodegeneration remains to be elucidated.
