Mechanisms of T-cell mediated aggravation of atherosclerosis

Cardiovascular disease caused by atherosclerosis is a growing concern in an aging population. Atherosclerosis is characterized by non-resolving inflammation and T-cells have been shown to play a key role. However, the mechanism of action of T-cell mediated progression of atherosclerosis is unknown. Using advanced mouse models of atherosclerosis in combination with human material we intend to dissect the mode of activation of plaque T-cells as well as the signaling pathways promoting plaque growth.
