Projektinformation
Beskrivning
A significant proportion of patients suffer from myocardial injury after noncardiac surgery. The majority of these patients neither fulfil the universal definition of myocardial infarction nor experience ischaemic symptoms.
The hypothesis of this research project is that peri-operative elevation of biomarkers, alone or combined in a biomarker panel, independently predict mortality and major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events in patients undergoing major abdominal surgery.

Populärvetenskaplig beskrivning
There might be risk to the heart during major surgery and anaesthesia, but its usual symptom of chest pain may be masked by pain-killers after surgery. We will study if some blood tests taken after surgery will reveal any injury to the heart muscel despite abscence of symptoms.
