New methods for tomographic functional imaging of the renal cortex

Beskrivning

Renal scintigraphy using dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) is a common functional imaging method, used to confirm or deny focal renal damage, and to the measure functional contribution of each kidney. Positron emission tomography in combination with computed tomography (PET/CT) targeting prostate specific membrane antigen (PSMA) is a functional imaging method used in prostate cancer. PSMA PET shows promise for renal imaging as well.

The aim of this thesis is to evaluate new methods for renal functional imaging; [18F]PSMA-1007 PET and [99mTc]Tc-DMSA scintigraphy using new gamma camera technology.

Being able to use [18F]PSMA-1007 PET for renal imaging, or using new generation gamma camera systems for [99mTc]Tc-DMSA, could potentially bring improved diagnostic performance. It could also eliminate the need for dedicated renal imaging in prostate cancer patients prior to radionuclide treatment.
