Textual constructions of the child and child space in children's urban fantasy

Projekt: Avhandling

The project will investigate by what means and with what effect the mode of children's urban fantasy constructs the child and the child space. By combining children's literature theory, space and place theory and urban fantasy I explore what ideas are central to the genre, and how it thematically differs from urban fantasy for adults. The child and the city are therefore central points of discussion. The project will utilise Brian Attebery's genre theory about "fuzzy sets" and discuss his ideas of mode vs. formula. The project will also engage with John Stephens, Perry Nodelman and Jane Carroll's theories about implicit ideological structures in children's literature. The target audience for the primary material will initially be 8-14 year-olds, with potential comparisons to YA texts.
