The Cape of the Good Hope Panel: Long-term studies of growth, inequality and labour coercion in the global south

The chief purpose of the project is to construct one of the largest panel data set in existence in the world. The data set will enable researchers to follow multiple generations of a complete settler population in the Cape Colony (1660-1840). The project will use the dataset to contact empirical micro-studies grounded in grand debates on the determinants of growth, inequality and labour corecion in a pre-industrial colonial context. The project currently involves four senior researchers, one post-doc and three doctoral students.
