Beskrivning

Background: Elite athletes are at increased risk of severe addictive gambling. Treatment seeking is low, likely due to stigma, and elite athletes may benefit from a sports contextual approach to treatment. Also, it is crucial to understand why men are more affected by gambling problems in sports, and what is needed to maintain low levels in women. Gambling problems put athletes at risk of getting involved in match-fixing, but few studies have focused on individual athletes' psychological safety related to match-fixing.

Aims: This study will cover the following research questions:

A. For elite athletes with gambling problems, does an online therapy with sports contextual approach improve treatment outcome and user satisfaction, compared to regular gambling treatment?

B. How can we understand – in qualitative interviews – gender differences in gambling problems, and what needs to be done to combat male gambling problems and maintain low problem rates in women?

C. How common are anonymously reported experiences of exposure to match-fixing attempts, and how is it related to individual risk factors and psychological safety in athletes?

Relevance of the project: Studies are carried out in close collaboration with player unions and sports therapists and address issues known to be problematic in the world of sports; gambling is a novel focus in sports but where treatment interventions are still lacking, and the threat of match-fixing is devastating to sports. Here, research is needed beyond judicial aspects, addressing individual factors and psychological well-being in athletes.
