Use of spectroscopic techniques to study fungal wood degradation

Projekt: Avhandling

The focus of the studies is free-living saprotrophic fungi, which play important role in decomposing plant tissues and therefore participate in the early steps of soil formation and in nutrient cycling across terrestrial ecosystems. It will involve the use of spectroscopic techniques to study decomposition mechanisms in fungi and examine the ability of fungi to decompose recalcitrant plant cell wall biopolymers. During my doctoral work, I will work to develop novel methods (particularly spectroscopic methods) that will allow us to examine the structural and chemical changes of cellulose and lignin during fungal decomposition, to examine if these changes agree with the current functional decomposition groups in fungi (e.g., white-rot wood decomposer) and to explore the environmental factors that can alter the decomposition outcome.
