Addressing active and healthy ageing and the challenges in welfare systems demands new solutions. User participation in research - where the the user is an active partner instead of being a study object - is being advocated for as a way to improve such services.
The UserAge research program is implemented as a four-node endeavor with international collaboration, coordinated by CASE at Lund University.
The program builds upon our previous/ongoing research with user participation. Involving user representatives - including all parties that are interested in and/or beneficiaries of research and international scientific experts - already during the development of the program, user participation will permeate all activities of the research program.
The ultimate goals are to:
•Maximize the impact of user participation
•Enhance the execution of high quality research
•Increase the knowledge about what difference user participation in research can make
•Evaluate the extent to which research about and with user participation makes an impact on practices and outcomes
In UserAge the users and the interdisciplinary research team will develop a broad arsenal of scientific methods that lay the foundations for the development of generalizable knowledge and cumulative knowledge building.
A three-module program
With the integration of researchers and different categories of users at the core, UserAge will establish an empirical research module, a capacity-building module and a modelling module.
New projects and activities cutting across the four-node research milieu will generate new evidence about user participation in research based on studies in Sweden and cross-nationally.
Projects I-III are PhD student projects supervised by interdisciplinary teams.
Project IV is a national panel study in order to provide a source for longitudinal data collection and participant recruitment for a range of research activities.
Following and building upon previous/ongoing research as well as the new projects, projects V and VI are cross-cutting endeavors that will nurture the development and optimization of methodology, knowledge translation, theory modelling and impact assessment ambitions.
UserAge will also produce education and training activities targeting users and future researchers in ageing and health.
A systematic examination of ethical considerations is important in research about and with user participation. Not the least regarding the dual roles of study participants and user representatives.
There are also training issues relating to junior researchers and PhD students developing the moral sensitivity skills necessary to engage in ethically competent research involving users.
