Direct and indirect costs for yersiniosis and shigellosis in Sweden

Sammanfattning

Yersiniosis and shigellosis are two bacteria-borne and food-related diseases that lead to significant costs in terms of direct costs (costs of healthcare, medicine, rehabilitation etc.), indirect costs (lost productivity due to absenteeism) and intangible costs (pain, nausea and other intangible aspects that can be linked to disease). It is essential to estimate these costs, partly to be able to compare the disease burden of various diseases, and partly to evaluate the effectiveness of using different measures aimed at reducing the burden of disease.

The purpose of this report is to estimate the direct and indirect costs of yersiniosis and shigellosis including the two sequelae reactive arthritis (ReA) and inflammatory bowel syndrome (IBS). Intangible costs require other methods to calculate and are not included in this analysis. However, it is possible to combine the findings of this report with an independent analysis of the intangible costs to obtain a more complete cost picture for the diseases.
