Neutrons were first used for studies of materials in the 1940s, as a minor auxiliary activity at nuclear weapons labs. Since then, as nuclear reactor technology has improved, the use has spread to wider areas of the field of materials science, including applications with commercial potential. Its detachment from military research and development (R&D) activities was pushed by the broadening of the range of applications, but also by a drift of the global center of gravity of neutron-beam use from North America to Europe in the 1970s and 1980s, and more recently by the emergence of new and superior techniques to complement and eventually replace reactor-based sources, namely spallation sources….
