Sammanfattning

In Schacter (2022), the author outlines the considerable progress that has been made in characterizing the impact of five (of the seven) sins of memory; specifically, transience, absentmindedness, misattribution, suggestibility, and persistence. As in his influential book, The Seven Sins of Memory: How the Mind Forgets and Remembers (Schacter, 2001, 2021), Schacter notes that this last sin of persistence is perhaps the most debilitating sin of all. Persistence, as explained by Schacter (2022), is characterized by the presence of unwanted (and emotional-laden) intrusive memories that typically result from the experience of highly stressful or traumatic events. The presence of these memories is known to negatively affect psychological well-being and is, according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, associated with a number of psychological disorders (5th ed.; American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
